If you are still struggling with Courier IMAP and its stupid “INBOX” Prefix, just install Dovecot.
I don’t remember what went wrong the other time, but this time a simple apt-get install dovecot worked out of the box.
Nothing to worry. Just too much smoke - probably some plastic bottles - and a lot of firemen and trucks.
